Nov. 12: “Zero the Hero”

Picture books are good.

Picture books about math are great.

Picture books about math that teach a moral lesson…amazing.

Zero the Hero, by Joan Holub, is definitely amazing. This book, just released earlier this year, is filled with fun animated characters, great illustrations by Tom Lichtenheld, and a moving story that teaches about feelings, friendship, self-worth and….math!  This clever picture book teaches the importance of zero as a placeholder, and how this simple symbol has changed the history of mathematics!

The book reviews for Zero the Hero on Amazon.com stated that this book is appropriate for ages 6 and up, and I totally agree with that. I think that all ages can appreciate the lessons and morals in this story, and if nothing else, enjoy a delightful story about how Zero saves the day!

One last note – I would like to give a shout out to some amazing heroes of mine – our U.S. military veterans, and my dad, Allan. Happy Birthday, Dad!
